UPDATE (9:25 a.m. on July 16, 2026): Mitchell city officials say they have postponed Thursday’s watermain valve replacement project on S. Burr Street and along E. Hanson due to construction issues. No timetable has been given for when the work might eventually take place.

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Valve replacement work on a major watermain on Mitchell’s east side will close part of Burr Street and shut down water service to homes and businesses in the area on Thursday.

The work will start at 8 a.m. with the project tentatively scheduled to be completed by 3:30 p.m. Traffic will be diverted off Burr between Ash and 1st Avenue.

From there, crews will move down Hanson, switching out valves at the Kimball, Mentzner, and Langdon intersections. In the process, water will be shut off to the 100 and 200 blocks of S. Burr, along with the 300 through 800 blocks of E. Hanson.

The city’s schedule is only an estimate. Depending on the progress being made, it could be wrapped up earlier or later than the timetable given.
