PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Most of the roof of South Dakota’s State Capitol Building in Pierre, except the copper dome, will be replaced.  The work is scheduled to begin this summer and will conclude in the fall.

Leah Haugan is the Special Projects Coordinator for the South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources Administration.  She says the last time the roof was replaced was in 1977.  Time has taken its toll, and a July 2023 hailstorm did the rest.  The roof is leaking and endangering the artwork and other historic features of the interior of the Capitol.  She says the replacement plan has been approved by the South Dakota Historical Society and the Capitol Beautification Committee.

A long reach crane is already in place on the north side of the Capitol building and will be in near constant use throughout the summer long project.  The north entrance of the building will remain open as work continues apace on top of the roof.

Built Right Construction & Roofing of Rapid City have been contracted to do the work.  Built Right says that the work should be completed by the end of November.
