STURGIS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The 85th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally ended with four deaths and 80 injuries from 66 crashes, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. This year saw more injury crashes and public contacts than in previous rallies. Fatalities included two single-motorcycle crashes on curves in the Black Hills, a pickup-versus-motorcycle collision near Rapid City, and a crash during a police pursuit outside Sturgis. Multiple other crashes caused minor injuries, including incidents involving deer and roadway departures. Statistics reflect only cases handled by the Highway Patrol. It looks like there were more crashes and fewer drugs at this year’s rally. The final “Rally Tally” shows about 266 misdemeanor drug arrests and just over 100 felony drug arrests. The totals are from the Sturgis and Rapid City districts from August 2nd through the end of the rally on August 10th. South Dakota troopers have made the largest crystal meth seizure in state history. Highway Patrol says a traffic stop on I-90 in Sturgis led to the discovery of about 207 pounds of meth, worth an estimated $12 million. A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to the stash. The 42-year-old driver, a non-citizen, was arrested and is now facing multiple drug charges. The vehicle was also seized. For more crime stories from MitchellNow.com, click here.
