SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota corrections officials say the number of parole absconders has dropped below 100 statewide — a major milestone in public safety efforts. Secretary of Corrections Kellie Wasko says the total fell from 486 to just 97 as of October 1st, thanks to the work of the Department of Corrections’ Absconder Apprehension Unit and its partnership with the U.S. Marshals Service. Since 2023, that unit has helped arrest more than 250 parole absconders across South Dakota and beyond — a sign, Wasko says, that accountability measures are working and communities are safer.
