South Dakota crime down 6% in 2025, state report shows

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Criminal offenses reported across South Dakota declined in 2025, with overall offenses down 6.03% compared with 2024, according to the newly released annual “Crime in South Dakota” report.

The report shows 64,261 total criminal offenses in 2025, down from 68,388 in 2024. Drug offenses also decreased 6.25%, with 6,358 drug offenses reported in 2025 compared with 6,782 in 2024.

More serious “Group A” offenses — including homicide, sex offenses and aggravated assaults — totaled 43,715 in 2025, a 7.78% decrease from 47,403 in 2024, the report said.

Homicides declined 28% statewide, with 23 homicides reported in 2025 compared with 32 in 2024.

Less serious “Group B” offenses — which include crimes such as DUI and disorderly conduct — totaled 20,546 in 2025, down 2.09% from 20,985 in 2024.

Attorney General Marty Jackley said the data supports South Dakota’s reputation as a safe place to raise a family.
