MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The Sioux Falls City Council has finalized its plan to fill an upcoming vacancy as Councilor Sarah Cole prepares to leave the city. Cole’s at-large seat will officially open Dec. 3.

Under the outlined process, current council members will nominate candidates and then vote to appoint Cole’s replacement. Individuals who wish to be considered must secure support from at least two council members willing to submit their names for nomination.

Council Chair Rich Merkouris said he favors choosing someone with past experience on the council, noting the temporary nature of the appointment.

“I think this is a unique situation where you’ve got a six-month window where you’re serving,” Merkouris said. “And so I think it makes a lot of sense to consider nominating someone or supporting that nomination who has that experience.”

Nominations are due Dec. 5, and the council is expected to make the appointment during its Dec. 9 meeting.
