MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Seasonal closures across the Black Hills National Forest will begin Monday, December 15, as forest officials close gates, roads, and recreation sites that do not remain open through the winter.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, seasonal gates are closed to provide wildlife refuge, protect natural resources, and improve public safety as some forest roads are converted to snowmobile trails. Roads and trails subject to seasonal closure are identified on the current Motor Vehicle Use Map.

Snowmobile trails are open annually from December 15 through March 31. Wheeled vehicles are prohibited on snowmobile trails during that time, with the exception of a small segment near the Big Hill Trails Area where over-snow bicycles are allowed.

Forest officials are also asking the public not to park vehicles in front of closed gates.

Some campgrounds and day-use areas will close for the season. A list of campgrounds that remain open during the winter is available through the U.S. Forest Service at fs.usda.gov.

Officials urge travelers to use extreme caution on forest system roads, noting that winter conditions may make roads hazardous or impassable due to snow and ice. National Forest System roads are not plowed or maintained during the winter months.

Seasonal roads and recreation sites typically reopen in mid-May, depending on weather and ground conditions.

More information about the Black Hills National Forest is available at fs.usda.gov.
