MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says that the average June will see 2.84 inches of rain for the entire month.  Mitchell got 7.89 inches over three days.  The National Weather Service says this is the second wettest June on record and the two days June 20-21, 2024, is the wettest period in June since records have been kept.

The Big Sioux River has broken flooding records all along the river ranging from one to four feet above previous record flooding levels.  The Big Sioux River will crest at 42.2 feet at Sioux City, a new record.  The James River at Yankton will crest at 24.4 feet and the Vermillion River will crest at 31.9 feet.

Rainfall amounts vary, depending on where one lives in the State but those along the i-29 corridor south of Sioux Falls experienced between 10 and 15 inches of rain with Canton receiving 18.2 inches during the storm period.

The South Dakota Senate voted 27-7 to advance SB 89, creating an EMS funding task force to study whether emergency medical services should be treated as an essential service and how to pay for it as many rural services rely on volunteers.

The Mitchell City Council voted 7–1 against a $50,000-per-year agreement with Retail Strategies aimed at recruiting new retail businesses. Several council members said they want to explore local partnerships before committing city funds.
