There was a protest held outside of Mitchell High School this morning in response to the mask mandate going back into effect today. A collection of adults and students stood outside the front of the high school. Some held signs with slogans such as “Let Us Breathe” and “Health Freedom.”

The mask mandate for Mitchell School District was voted in during a special School Board meeting on Monday amid rising cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota. The state reported 1,020 new cases on Tuesday and 5,035 active cases — and 216 people are currently hospitalized. Davison County’s active case total is also on the rise — at 65 as of Tuesday.
