Proposed DSS Rule Raises Alarms Over Child Therapy Funding

MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A proposed rule from South Dakota’s Department of Social Services has LifeScape sounding the alarm. The nonprofit says the change could slash its Medicaid funding by $10 million a year, an 80 percent cut, threatening therapy services for more than 3,300 children and families. LifeScape provides specialized care that helps kids walk, talk, and eat, and argues its programs don’t fit a one-size-fits-all model. DSS says the rule is meant to modernize hospital reimbursements, but LifeScape leaders plan to push for changes before the September 20 public comment deadline. Lawmakers review the rule October 7.
