Odor Complaints Continue at Freeman Rendering Plant

FREEMAN, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Residents near Freeman say the stench from the Dakota Protein Solutions plant is still unbearable, nearly a year after opening. Despite promises of odor-control technology, neighbors describe the smell as “dead flesh” and say little has improved. The company says it’s working on ventilation fixes, but frustration is growing. The plant, which recycles animal waste into fuel and feed, was backed by a $2.5 million state loan and relies on city water. It’s also under OSHA investigation following a complaint.
