Mitchell’s First Woman Mayor, Alice Claggett, Passes Away at 97

MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Mitchell is remembering a trailblazer this week. Alice Claggett, the only woman ever to serve as the city’s mayor, has died at the age of 97. Claggett led the city for three terms from 1998 to 2006, making her one of the longest-serving mayors in Mitchell’s history. She helped bring Cabela’s to town, pushed for affordable housing, and even backed the creation of the local skate park, something today’s mayor Jordan Hanson says he still remembers from his high school years. The Mitchell Republic reports she was a  Minnesota native and former nurse, who was deeply involved in civic life and often said she lived by the Golden Rule, treating people the way she wanted to be treated. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 6 at First United Methodist Church, with visitation on Sunday afternoon. For more Government stories from MitchellNow.com, Click Here.
