Mitchell Term Limits Petition Near Signature Goal

MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A petition to impose term limits on Mitchell’s mayor and city council members is just 20 or 30 signatures away from qualifying for the ballot. Councilman Mike Bathke says the measure, if passed, would cap officials at three consecutive terms, including past and current service, potentially turning over six of the eight council seats by 2027. Bathke hopes to place the proposal on the June 2026 ballot to avoid the cost of a special election. According to the Mitchell Republic, supporters say it would bring fresh voices to city leadership, while opponents argue local experience is critical for long-term projects.
