MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell School Board on Monday approved the calendar for the K-12 2024-25 school year.  Superintendent Joe Childs told the board that input was taken regarding the calendar from parents and teachers.  He said this is the most popular calendar that the district has proposed in quite some time.

Childs noted that the semesters are unbalanced.  There are 81 days in one semester and 92 in the other.  School board member Terry Aslesen expressed concern, saying the unbalanced semesters don’t affect teachers who teach year-long classes.  He added that teachers who only teach semester-long classes have an 11-day difference to negotiate.  Aslesen proposed starting school a week earlier in the future, which would balance the semesters at 86 and 87 days.

Superintendent Childs noted that the calendar has no built-in snow days.  He said that adding them would mean students would have to come back to school after Memorial Day.

The proposed K-12 2024-25 school calendar is as follows:
