MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The Mitchell Police Department is pushing for riders to stay safe as electric motorcycles surge in popularity.

Officials say the law considers the bikes motor vehicles, so anyone using one needs to have a valid driver’s license, along with insurance and registration. Electric motorcycles need to have working lights and everyone on board has to have eye protection, plus a helmet if they are under 18 years old.

The bikes cannot be ridden on sidewalks, over curbs, through the grass, or other areas where a car or truck are not allowed to go. Drivers need to follow the same rules of the road as other vehicles.

The department writes on Facebook, “We have observed riders operating these vehicles in ways that create safety concerns and violate state law. Parents should understand that these are not toys and are not intended to be ridden freely throughout the city without regard for traffic laws. Electric motorcycles carry the same responsibilities as traditional motorcycles.”

Officials ask parents to become familiar with the laws regarding electric motorcycles before buying one for their children.
