MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Mitchell is preparing for future burial needs with a 20-acre west cemetery expansion, keeping the project on time and mostly within budget. The Golf and Cemetery Board approved a $12,200 design contract with an engineering firm, with an option to add a smaller east-side expansion for $8,500. That would put the design cost $700 over budget, but city officials say the project is still on track. The west expansion, set to begin design in 2025 and construction in 2027, could eventually handle up to 10,000 burials. Officials say developing part of the west site first will meet the city’s needs for years to come, while also giving time to budget for full expansion.
