Mitchell leaders weigh holding water, sewer rates steady as future hikes for 2026-27 remain undecided

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mitchell city leaders are considering holding water and sewer utility rates steady rather than approving another increase, as residents look for ways to reduce household costs, according to the Mitchell Republic.

The city purchased about 45 million gallons of water in January at one of the lowest January prices in recent years and also carries more than $55 million in remaining debt tied to State Revolving Fund loans.

A $3.75 rate increase for 2025 has already been approved. However, additional increases that had been planned for 2026 and 2027 have not yet been approved by the Mitchell City Council.

City officials are continuing work on a secondary Missouri River pipeline intended to strengthen Mitchell’s long-term water supply and help manage future costs, according to the report.

Council discussion on utility rates is expected to continue as officials review costs, debt obligations and long-term infrastructure needs.
