MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The Mitchell City Council voted 6-2 Monday to override Mayor Jordan Hanson’s veto and move forward with preliminary design work on a proposed five-hole par-3 short course at Lakeview Golf Course.

The vote reapproved a $9,400 design agreement with Norby Golf Course Design Inc. for a project estimated at about $1.05 million. The short course would be built in the current bowling green area north of the Lakeview clubhouse, according to reporting from the Mitchell Republic.

Council members Mike Bathke and John Doescher voted to uphold the veto, the paper reported. Supporters said the design phase is needed to better determine final costs and that a short course could help attract beginners and families and serve as a “feeder” for both city-owned Lakeview and the privately owned Wild Oak course.

Hanson opposed using general fund dollars, arguing Lakeview operates as an enterprise fund and should cover improvements through user fees.

Also discussed publicly included a mix of general fund dollars, golf course reserves and designated funds, private pledges and other reallocations tied to golf course finances.
