In a statement released by his office, Walz said he believes he could win reelection but argued that campaign politics would pull time and attention away from addressing the issue and protecting Minnesotans.

Walz also pushed back on political criticism tied to the investigations, calling it an attempt to smear him and saying some opponents are trying to exploit the controversy.

Federal authorities have been investigating allegations involving fraud schemes connected to social service programs in Minnesota, and the issue has become a major flashpoint ahead of the 2026 election cycle, according to Reuters.

With Walz stepping aside, multiple outlets report that U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is being encouraged to run for governor and is considering the race, though she has not announced a decision.
