MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — It’s a patriotic First Fridays on Main for July.

Scheduled for 5-9 p.m. on Main Street between 5th and 7th Avenues on July 3rd, get ready for every red, white, and blue themed activity one could possibly dream up. The car show will feature entries sporting the colors of the American flag. The ‘Red, White and WOW’ trophy goes to the best red ride, the ‘Stars and Shine’ trophy to a white entry, and the ‘True Blue Cruiser’ award speaks for itself. The Best in Show nod becomes the All-American Showstopper award, and of course there is a nod for people’s choice.

The kids will decorate their bikes for a parade with its own special cruising course put together by Ron’s Bike Shop. Keeping with the American theme, the Mitchell Fire Department is cracking open a ruby red fire hydrant to help the little ones cool down on what is forecast to be a hot day in the Corn Palace city. Parents should plan on the kids getting wet. Pack the beach balls, pool noodles, and googles.

Live music will take over the Corn Palace Plaza with the Layton Lee Band as the main act. There’s nothing more American than baseball. The Palace City American Legion squad will have the dunk tank set up. Proceeds go to help pay for kids to play the national pastime.

Vendor stands, shopping, and food trucks round out the fun. A special bake sale auction of cakes, cookies, bars, pies, breads, candles, and other patriotic treats will benefit the Carnegie Resource Center and the historical society. The group is trying to digitize newspaper records for the area going back to the city’s founding in 1885. The estimated cost of the archiving is $18,000. Bidding begins at 5:00 p.m. with the winners for each item announced at 8:00.
