MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Huron is scaling back its 4th of July celebrations in the wake of severe weather that hit on Thursday evening.

The Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau made an announcement Friday that the parade and vendor fair that was to follow in Campbell Park are canceled. The parade was scheduled to step off at 10:30 a.m. at 9th and Dakota.

In a Facebook post, the chamber wrote, “The safety of our participants, volunteers, vendors, and attendees is our top priority, and we believe this is the best decision for everyone.

“Thank you for your understanding, and we hope everyone stays safe.”

It’s not all bad news, though. The chamber clarified that the fireworks shows will still go on as scheduled. The first shell goes into the air over Ravine Lake and Lake Byron at 10:00 p.m.
