Grass Fire Near Mitchell Airport Contained

MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A grass fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon northeast of the Mitchell Regional Airport, prompting a large response from the Mitchell, Ethan, and Letcher fire departments. The fire, fueled by warm temperatures and strong winds, quickly spread to nearly a mile in length and affected three separate sections of land. A local farmer assisted by creating firebreaks with a tractor, helping crews gain control. By 6 p.m., the fire was under control with no reported injuries or property damage. The cause is still unknown, and crews remain cautious about potential flare-ups.
