Freeman Residents Push Back Against Odor from Rendering Plant

FREEMAN, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) More than 40 residents packed a Turner County meeting in Parker to voice frustration over odors from Dakota Protein Solutions, a rendering plant near Freeman. County officials outlined three violations of the plant’s conditional use permit, including lack of a road haul agreement, dust control issues, and improper carcass storage. Plant investor Scott Stern apologized and blamed equipment malfunctions, airflow problems, and poor water quality for the odor, promising fixes like a new water source and storage tank. Residents, however, say the stench has disrupted daily life, with one noting her children’s lungs burn during outdoor activities. The Board of Adjustment took no action but set a Sept. 23 evidentiary hearing to decide whether DPS is in violation of its permit. For more Government stories from MitchellNow.com, Click Here.
