MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Officials at Custer State Park say the first bison calf of the season has been born, signaling the arrival of spring in one of South Dakota’s most iconic landscapes.

The park shared a photo of the newborn calf alongside its mother on social media, noting the announcement was not an April Fool’s joke.

The birth comes just days after a burro foal was also spotted within the park, adding to what officials describe as one of the most exciting times of year for wildlife activity.

Custer State Park is known for its diverse wildlife population, including bison, burros, elk, coyotes, and other native species that roam freely across the park’s expansive terrain.

Each spring, visitors and staff alike watch for the arrival of new animals, particularly the bright orange-red bison calves often referred to as “red dogs.”

Park officials say the seasonal births highlight the health and vitality of the park’s wildlife ecosystem and offer visitors unique opportunities to observe animals in their natural habitat.

They remind visitors to keep a safe distance from wildlife, especially during calving season, as animals can be more protective of their young.
