MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Dakota Wesleyan University will wrap up its year-long Lecture Series on topics of contemporary interest.

The fourth and final of the series, the annual Carhart Lecture, will be held on Tuesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. in the School of Business, Innovation and Leadership, Room 117, on the DWU campus.  Dr. Bret Lingwall is an Associate Professor at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Dr. Lingwall’s research encompasses geotechnical, geo-environmental, bio-geotechnical and earthquake engineering. His research includes biomimicry, carbon sequestration, soil health, critical minerals, erosion, PFAS, mine tailings and wildland fire. Dr. Lingwall also maintains a pedagogical research program which studies physiological aspects of learning, ungraded classrooms, building creativity in forming critical engineering practice skills in students. He is also an active consulting engineer, where he aids clients in high-level reviews, expert witness, litigation support, site-specific seismic studies, and finding novel solutions for wicked soil and rock problems.

Lingwall’s lecture is entitled “Unlocking Atmospheric Carbon Capture, Sequestration and Beneficial Reuse with Biology.”

The Carhart Lectures were endowed by DWU alumnus Homer Carhart ’36, whose engineering firm provided services to the armed forces for many years. Carhart served on the panel of experts who investigated the explosion aboard the spaceship Challenger.

The lecture is free and open to the public. It will also be livestreamed at dwu.edu/live.  Check the DWU website events calendar or social media for updates.
