MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson said he believes 2025 was among the most consequential policy-making years in decades, highlighting tax changes, border enforcement efforts and reforms to federal benefit programs.

In year-end remarks, the Pierre Republican pointed to a sweeping reconciliation package Republicans promoted as the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” saying it delivered major spending reductions and tax relief. A Mitchell Now report on the measure said the package included border security funding and changes to programs such as Medicaid and SNAP.

Johnson also touted provisions he said reduced taxes on overtime and tipped income, along with changes he described as welfare reforms and permitting updates aimed at speeding approval of large projects.

Some independent analyses have noted the law’s “no tax” provisions on tips and overtime function as temporary, capped tax benefits rather than a blanket elimination, and some fact-checkers have disputed broad claims about the overall size of the tax cut.

Johnson, South Dakota’s lone member of the U.S. House, is running for governor in 2026.
