MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Five women were nominated for the honor of the Dakotafest Woman Farmer of the Year Award.  They were Sara Easton, Kendra Olson, Barbara Powell, Stacy Watembach and Erin Yost.

Barbara Powell was awarded the title of Dakotafest Woman Farmer of the Year.  She and her husband began their farm life, more than two decades ago, with 80 acres and 25 cows.  Today, they have 800 acres of farm ground under cultivation with an additional 2000 acres of pastureland for their 180 head of cattle.

Mrs. Powell says her main responsibility is to care for the cattle, including most of the work during calving season.  She says she won’t deal with anything she can’t outrun so some cattle end up going to market a bit sooner than others.

Congratulations to Barbara Powell of rural Chamberlain on being named the Dakotafest Woman Farmer of the Year.
