Corn Palace Seats Headed for Scrap After Auction Winner No-Shows

MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The historic Corn Palace seats are being hauled away to salvage after the top bidder in an online auction failed to pick them up. A city crew began loading the 1,772 seats Friday morning, sending them to H and R Salvage west of Mitchell where the wood will be separated and the metal recycled. The bidder, who paid just over $200 for the lot, lost his claim when he didn’t collect them on time. The 1960s-era chairs were removed last week following the Corn Palace Festival, marking the end of nearly six decades of use. New seating and ADA-compliant railings will be installed in the coming weeks as part of a $91,000 renovation project. For more Government stories from MitchellNow.com, Click Here.
