MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A new trail is taking shape next to Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating the end of the prep work for the ‘Bypass Trail.’ The chain link fence on the north side of Cadwell has been pulled out. Support posts were heaving from the ground and, with soccer no longer being played there, the city had no reason to have a barrier up that tried to pen in stray balls. Crews also leveled the dirt to make for an easy paving.

The trail starts at 8th Avenue near the water tower, follows along the Highway 37 bypass, then veers east to follow the park. The trail is being extended to cross 15th Avenue, eventually winding between a gravel parking lot and wetland, and finally passing to the west of the Mitchell Christian School. Right now, crews have leveled the path and are in the process of pouring concrete. When finished, the path will be available for walkers, runners, and bicycles only.

The Bypass Trail will be maintained by the Mitchell Parks and Recreation Department.

Crews were pouring concrete for the new Bypass Trail in Mitchell on Wednesday afternoon, June 24th.
