American Legion Boys State Conference Selects Mitchell, Ethan Students for High-Profile Assignments

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A young man from Mitchell received a plum assignment during elections at the 83rd Annual Session of the American Legion Boys State of South Dakota conference last week.

Owen Kopfmann was one of two delegates selected to represent the state in Washington, D.C. at the national American Legion Boys National program in July. The most prestigious statewide post will be manned by another local student. Senior Coltyn Raymond from nearby Ethan was picked to be governor.

Other statewide selections include Lieutenant Governor Patrick Quale of Volga, Attorney General Lukas Cann of Rapid City, Secretary of State Hunter Werner of Spearfish, State Auditor Henry Van Scharrel of Huron, State Treasurer Shahid Shaik of Sioux Falls, and Commissioner of School and Public Lands Samuel Barnett of Sioux Falls.

Other elections filled posts on the boys supreme court, speaker of the house, party leadership, and public utilities commission.

The program was held at Northern State University in Aberdeen. It is designed to help teach juniors and seniors about the American system of government, as well as the responsibility of public service and being an informed voter.
