MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an urgent recall for alfredo sauce that could potentially be contaminated with salmonella, and may be available locally.

The sauce was distributed by The Coffee Connexion in Lebanon, Tennessee. The sauce was sold in 12 states, including South Dakota. The recall was initially made voluntarily last month, but the FDA has made it a priority by designating the recall as Class I. That level is the most serious the agency can put out. It indicates a reasonable probability that consumption of the sauce would lead to serious sickness, or even death.

Officials worry dry milk powder in the alfredo could contain salmonella. Most who get sick from salmonella have diarrhea, fever, cramps, or nausea. It can take between 6 hours and three days for symptoms to show up. In severe cases, the bacteria causes extreme dehydration, requiring a trip to the doctor, or even the emergency room. Salmonella can spread from the stomach and intestines to other organs on occasion and has even been linked to long-lasting arthritis in some instances.

The recall is for 913 cases of the sauce. Each case contains 12 bags that weigh roughly 3.5 pounds apiece. The items would have likely been sold to commercial kitchens like restaurants or school districts, who prepare food in bulk.
