MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — AAA is encouraging consumers to add an “insurance resolution” for 2026: take time early in the year to review insurance policies and confirm coverage still matches current needs.

In a Jan. 7 news release from Sioux Falls, AAA said life changes — including job shifts, moves, home renovations and new drivers in the household — can create gaps or lead people to pay for coverage they no longer need.

“The start of a new year is the perfect moment to take a fresh look at your insurance,” said Dan Scroggins, vice president of personal lines insurance for AAA. “A lot can change in a year, and your policies should change right along with your life.”

AAA suggested motorists reassess driving habits, since changes in annual mileage — such as working from home or retirement — may qualify some drivers for lower rates. The organization also urged families to update policies when teens begin driving or students leave for college, and to consider whether collision or comprehensive coverage still makes sense for older vehicles.

For home and renters coverage, AAA recommended updating home inventories, noting a simple smartphone video walkthrough can help document belongings after major purchases or upgrades. AAA also said renovations like finished basements or updated bathrooms can change rebuild costs and coverage needs.

AAA also advised consumers to review life insurance beneficiaries annually, consider optional add-ons such as water backup or service line coverage, and look at policies like flood, umbrella, travel and pet insurance based on individual risk.
