PUKWANA, SD (Mitchell Now) — The Brule County Fairgrounds were filled with the sound of honks, clucking, and more than one cock a doodle do on Wednesday afternoon.
Mitchell Now stopped by to take a gander at what 4-H Achievement Days looks like in Pukwana and found an event that is inspiring youth to take on big challenges. Adeline Cox, just nine years old, is back for the third time. She discussed how she has transformed from nervous to brave as she shows various animals with 4-H.
Ella Randall revealed what the judges are looking for during showings. The 14-year-old stressed how the judges are putting education first, looking to see if Randall and others are able to correctly identify anatomy and other facts about their feathered friends, rather than zeroing in on the bird’s behavior during the examination.
Ingrid Thomas just turned 12 and is pushing herself into new territory this year. She talked to Mitchell Now while holding an adorable three-month-old duck named Gabby, who’s curious nature had her giving our equipment the once over. In addition to animals, Thomas is expanding her efforts in the static events. On Tuesday evening, she was debuting a glass giraffe craft that she put together this summer.
