Pierre Protest Remains Peaceful

A peaceful protest remained peaceful in South Dakota’s capital city last night. A crowd of sixty people gathered in Pierre to protest the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis last week. The protest, which began at 5 PM, lasted about five and a half hours. A smaller group of two dozen people continued their protest at nightfall. By 10:30 p.m. only squads of law enforcement officers and military police could be found for several blocks around the Capitol. A heavily armed presence remained throughout Pierre. Rumors of potential unrest like that observed in Sioux Falls on Sunday night had local citizens and state officials worried. Businesses in Pierre closed early as social media rumors and unsubstantiated reports circulated widely as the day closed.
