The Mitchell City Council last night approved the demolition of the Knights of Columbus Hall, located on East 2nd Avenue. The demolition request was made by Holy Family Church. The building has been used as a meeting space and gymnasium, but it needs a new boiler, air conditioning unit, and roof repair. The land will be used for additional parking with around thirty parking spaces being added. The church requested that the city waive the tipping fees for approximately 500 tons of materials from the demolition, resulting in $20,000 in lost revenue for the city. That would be in exchange for adding the public parking lot. The city will enter into a formal agreement with the church ensuring that the land will be used for parking.
