Wismer To Run For Governor

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota state Rep. Susan Wismer of Britton says she will seek the Democratic nomination to run for governor this year.

Wismer announced her candidacy Tuesday in the state Capitol building in Pierre.

She says Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard, who is expected to seek re-election, has not done enough to provide state financial support to education and health care. Wismer says she wants to help educate children of all income levels and provide jobs with good wages.

The 58-year-old Wismer has been in the Legislature since 2009. She operates a tax and bookkeeping business with her sister.

Wismer’s announcement means Democrats will have a primary in the governor’s race. The former head of the state wildfire agency, Joe Lowe, also is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.
