PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — About 1,200 people including 800 athletes are expected in Pierre this weekend for the Special Olympics South Dakota 2014 State Basketball Tournament.

The Friday-Saturday event is taking place in eight gyms at four sites in Pierre and neighboring Fort Pierre. Sixty teams are competing.

Spokesman Chuck Quinn says that it’s the first time the tournament has been held in Pierre. He says the central location is likely to boost attendance.

The games are open to the public, and there’s no charge to attend.
