PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — State health officials are getting an early start on mosquito season by surveying communities about their control programs.

State epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger says South Dakota has had more than a decade of West Nile Virus transmission, so it’s appropriate to take a look at the current status of mosquito control capacity on the community level and assess future needs.

He said the Department of Health knows that some communities have struggled to maintain and fund their mosquito control programs.

The department and SDSU Extension are teaming to identify the current capacity of programs as well any needs for additional research, resources and training.
