Audit Of Governor’s Office Of Economic Development Complete

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Reports by two accounting firms have found flaws in some procedures used by South Dakota’s economic development agency. But the reviews identified no misconduct beyond the incidents that prompted the reviews.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard ordered the reviews after finding out about misconduct that allegedly occurred in the Governor’s Office of Economic Development before he took office in 2011.

The two reviews found problems in procedures used by the development office and made recommendations to correct those problems. But the reviews do not deal specifically with the details of alleged misconduct involving the financing of a failed beef packing plant in Aberdeen.

A detailed audit of the agency is expected in a couple of weeks and could shed light on issues surrounding the beef plant’s financing. Federal officials also are investigating.
