Pierre Police Officer Justified In Tasering Child

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — State investigators concluded that a Pierre police officer was justified in using his Taser on an 8-year-old girl in October.

The Division of Criminal Investigation report was released Tuesday. It echoes a Pierre Police Department review that found the officer followed procedure because the girl was suicidal and turned a knife toward the officer.

The state report indicates the girl was eventually shocked with the stun gun because it was the safest method to defuse the situation. She was not seriously injured.

The state’s attorney says she’s satisfied with the investigation and won’t pursue charges against the officer or the girl.
