City Government Restructuring Discussed At Council Meeting

A potential restructuring of city government was discussed at Monday night’s Mitchell City Council meeting.  Mitchell Mayor Ken Tracy placed the item on the agenda, partially due to the upcoming retirement of Public Works Director Tim McGannon.  The mayor says the city has several options to explore; however, one form of government Tracy will not discuss is a city manager form.  Mitchell voters resoundingly voted against a city manager form of government in 2011.

No action was taken, as the item was a discussion item on the agenda last night.  Twenty cities in the state have city administrators.  The council may bring in officials from Brandon and Pierre to discuss a city administrator form of government at a future council meeting.

Also last night, the council authorized the purchase agreement for the Mitchell VFW building, clearing the way for the VFW to begin plans to move to a different location.  The city plans on demolishing the building.   That likely will not be done until spring.
