City Council Discusses City Administrator Role

What role would a city administrator have in Mitchell?  That question, as well as several others, were discussed on Monday night by the Mitchell City Council.  The council last month approved the hiring of a city administrator.  Now, the council must work out the details of the position.  Mitchell Mayor Ken Tracy says there are a couple of different options for the chain of command.  Councilman Mel Olson said the city administrator would need a certain amount of power and resources to achieve his or her goals.  Another topic that was discussed was how to evaluate the job the administrator is doing.  Council President Jeff Smith says some guidelines need to be written.  Salary was also discussed.  The typical salary for the position in the state is between $80,000 and $100,000.  The item was for discussion purposes only, and so no action was taken by the council.
