Avera To Offer Pioneering Testing

Avera To Offer Pioneering Testing

Avera and its orthopedic partners in Mitchell and Sioux Falls have announced plans to offer personalized medicine for post‑surgical pain control in patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgery.

Personalized medicine is the use of genetic analysis to better manage a patient’s disease, harnessing genetic science and technology to understand how each patient metabolizes pain medications.

Patients who see orthopedic surgeons at Avera Medical Group Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Mitchell and CORE Orthopedics Avera Medical Group in Sioux Falls will be offered a blood test based on their personal history with pain medications.

This blood test will be analyzed in Sioux Falls at the Avera Institute for Human Genetics. Normally, those tests are sent out of state for analysis.  The cost of the testing will be covered by Medicare and some insurance providers.

The testing is the first of its kind in South Dakota and is rare nationwide.
