    Mitchell Rec Center is taking registration for Fall Football & Soccer Programs starting Wednesday, July 16, 2014.

    You can register online or stop down to the Rec Center.
    They are also in need of volunteer coaches for football programs.

    CASA in Need of Volunteers

    An organization that helps neglected and abused desperately needs more volunteers. CASA appoints volunteers to be the voice for these children in court if they’re removed from their homes.
    The need to help children in CASA’s 8 county coverage area of Aurora, Brule, Buffalo, Davison, Douglas, Hanson, Hutchinson, and McCook is continuing to rise year after year.
    Last year there were 46 children helped by a CASA and to date this year 33 with 4 children CURRENTLY WAITING for a CASA Volunteer.

    To become a CASA volunteer you need to go through 32 hours of training. If you are interested call the CASA office at 605-996-1212 or email Help a Child Replace a Life of Hurt with One of Hope!

    Mitchell Area Optimist Club 2nd Annual Ryan Hohn Memorial 5k Run & Walk

    The Mitchell Area Optimist Club will hold its 2nd annual Ryan Hohn Memorial 5k run and walk on Saturday August 2nd. The event will begin at the Resurrection Lutheran Church at the corner of N Harmon Drive and Hwy 37 in Mitchell. Registration begins at 8:30am with the run/walk starting at 9:30am.

    This year’s route will begin and end from the church parking lot and will make a loop down N Harmon Drive. Registration fee is $25 and that includes a FREE Ryan Hohn Memorial Run T-shirt if registered by Friday July 25th. Registrations received after the 25th or on race day will be $35 and t-shirts are subject to availabity.     All proceeds from the event will benefit the Mitchell Area Optimist Club and Parkston High School’s Ryan Hohn Scholarship fund.

    In The Water For Water: Kids helping Kids

    Wednesday, August 6th 2014 - 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm at Dock 44 Marina

    Take the swim challenge. Swim across the Missouri (approx 1 mile) or across the bay (approx 1/4 mile) at Dock 44 to help raise money for non-profit Champions House foundation. Champions House helps the orphans and poor by drilling clean water wells, providing food and health care for those the Hindu government calls “untouchables”. In The Water For Water (2013) raised money to drill 5 wells but there is still a waiting list of villages in need of clean water. This year we are offering a organized Missouri river for swimming enthusiast of all ages. Support boats and rest stops will be available for swimmers who dare take the challenge.     Dakota Wesleyan Football Team Members Cleanup Mitchell

    Sunday, August 17th 2014 - 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

    Members of the Dakota Wesleyan football team will fan out across the city of Mitchell from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 17th to help residents clean their yards and/or homes. The assistance is free of charge and will be available only to residents within the Mitchell city limits. The squad will perform whatever cleaning projects the residents may have, but residents will be required to supply the necessary tools and cleaning supplies. Team members will haul trash curbside for the usual garbage collection, but will not transport it to any waste collection site.

    The 6th Annual Community Plunge

    Community Plunge began at Dakota Wesleyan University six years ago as an opportunity for businesses and organizations to look for employees and volunteers and for DWU students to get to know their new community better. In years past, churches, service clubs and businesses have all participated, as well as student organizations. Last year, more than 50 booths were set up and more than 150 students participated.

    The sixth annual Community Plunge will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Sherman Center at DWU.

    JVCC “Got Money?” Ways to Live Life with a Plan

    The JVCC is working with Brenda Schulte at Lutheran Social Services on a financial seminar day. We are looking for door prizes for the people. We are expecting hopefully 100 people maybe more so items will be given in drawing form.

    This will be Saturday, September 27 from 9:00 am to 3:15 pm. The event will be called Got Money? Ways to enjoy life with a plan.

    We are also hoping to get donations for the food, water and pop. If your company can help with this please let me know. We are planning on having donuts in the morning and then lunch we were thinking sandwiches, chips and a dessert bar and then cookies for the afternoon snack.

    This event will be free and open to the public. We are planning on requesting a head count for lunch so we can have a bit of an idea how many people to plan for.
