Local Optimist Club to Sponsor 2nd Annual Oratorical Contest

The Mitchell Area Optimist Club is encouraging area students to speak their minds about the topic “How My Optimism Will Help Me Press On To ‘Greater Achievements of the Future’” as part of the Optimist International Oratorical Contest for the 2014-2015 year.

The Optimist Club will judge the local students’ speeches based on content and presentation to determine the top winners. Winners will receive a cash prize and compete at the district level for the opportunity to win college scholarships. Students under the age of 19 who have not yet graduated from high school or the equivalent are eligible to participate.

The deadline to enter the 2nd annual contest is Friday, March 13, 2015. The contest date is tentatively planned for March 24, 2015. Students wishing to participate in the oratorical contest can find out more about the contest by contacting Vicki Adams at 605-999-2652 or vadams@cortrustbank.com.

The Mitchell Skating Academy is one of Mitchell’s newest opportunities for children, youth and families in the Mitchell area. Mitchell Skating Academy was formed in the spring of 2014 by a group of parents who were inspired by their children’s love of skating. As a member of United States Figure Skating Association, the national governing body for the sport of figure skating, we are of committed to promoting excellence in figure skating through quality coaching, practice and classes. Our program offers basic skills instruction as well as specialized classes in ice dance, choreography and performance, adult skating – even therapeutic skating for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Palace City Jazz Festival

There will be an evening concert on Tuesday, February 10th, 2015 at 7:00pm at the DWU Sherman Center. The concert will feature DWU and Mitchell High Jazz Bands along with other performing artists.
Tickets are available at the door or in advance at County Fair. Prices are as follows: $5 for adults and $2 for students.
