About 10 years ago I was called by a farmer to help a ewe who was having difficulty giving birth. I performed the task of straightening and turning the lamb so it could be born, I was able to save the ewe and her 3 babies that night, It had been a long day and I was kinda crabby that night about having to go back outside and into the cold night to see one more patient. But this night changed my perspective on what it means to be a veterinarian.
When I had the large animal clinic I had a policy of making sure every new baby got a warm bottle of moms milk before I left the farm. So I was back there milking this ewe, I was cold tired and ready to go home, and thinking I wish this farmer would milk his own sheep. Suddenly this ewe reached around and licked my face repeatedly, as if to say thank you! It is truly amazing the opportunities I have been given to help many many animals. All of the stories are good, some are great. And a few are amazing.
